June 20, 2024 | by Alberto Ricordi and Tina Lau

Palapalai is an indigenous Hawaiian fern – one of the most important plants in hula – and Oʻahu Extension was proud to host a recent talk with Hawaiian fern specialist Kay Lynch. The UH Horticulture graduate (ʻ98), Master Gardener, and founder of Lāʻau Hawaiʻi, a Hawaiian fern propagation research nursery, spoke at CTAHR’s Urban Garden Center on the importance of ferns in the Hawaiian ecosystem, the importance of including ferns in restoration and landscape work, and the need for fern propagators. Her “first principles” for fern growers included:Ask: Where does this fern naturally grow? (See Hawai‘i’s Ferns and Fern Allies, by Daniel D. Palmer). The answer will suggest its light, soil (or potting mix), and moisture preferences.Remember: Most Hawaiian ferns are understory plants, and require some amount of shade. Some species can take morning sun.Remember: Ferns have fibrous root systems hiding just below the soil surface. So they require (1) even moisture, and (2) fast-draining soil or potting mix that can hold moisture but not become soggy.Participants then engaged Kay in a lively Q’nA discussion, ranging in topics from “What can be done by the general public to support habitat restoration?” to “Why is the selection of native ferns in the retail trade so limited?” to “Is the palapalai that I bought from a nursery really a native species?”Master Gardener Lana Brodziak commented on the need to educate legislators about conservation concerns and invasive species threats to native species survival. Kay said an understanding of how the components of a Hawaiian forest work together could lead to more action to restore the fern understory. One way that legislators and the public could be motivated to protect forests is by showing them the beauty of native ferns and other plants in gardens and how they are used culturally, such as in lei. Extension outreach programs can fill that gap of understanding with real experiences in the garden and with the use of ferns. As part of the workshop, we also led participants in a hands-on propagation exercise in which participants divided ferns from a previous trial held at UGC.“From making lei to practicing lāʻau lapaʻau to everyday cooking and well-being, native ferns have historically played an important role,” says Jessica Higashi. “As these native species become lost to their more convenient and hardy non-native cousins, so does the culture. Kay’s work with ferns is helping to preserve not only the plants, but the people. The value in that is immeasurable.”

They plan to refine extraction methods for fucoidan and alginate, investigate potential applications for the seaweed’s biomass residue – and perhaps most importantly – conduct a techno-economic analysis to assess the feasibility and economic potential of scaling up a Dictyota-based biorefinery.

“If we can develop a biorefinery, focused on this indigenous Hawaiian seaweed, to produce high-value compounds while simultaneously remediating aquaculture effluent, this will introduce sustainable macroalgal-based bioproducts to the Hawaiʻi marketplace and create new avenues for a circular bioeconomy in the state,” says Samir. “The macromolecular composition of the residual biomass may also be suitable for additional biobased products, such as aquafeeds or biomaterials.”

He adds, “The outcomes of this project have the potential to develop larger extramural grants and strong collaborations between private and public institutions, with special emphasis on commercialization.”

In modern times, these seafood “farms” can greatly relieve pressure on wild stocks and supplement market demands – especially local species that are increasingly important economically.

Yet, efforts to revitalize this traditional aquaculture have encountered challenges. For example, fish introduced into the fishponds to enhance stocks often have low resilience. And for some species of high economic interest, there’s also a lack of reliable reproduction techniques.

But with biennial Sea Grant awards in hand, two new aquaculture track projects led by Andre Seale of the Dept. of Human Nutrition Food and Animal Sciences are addressing these problems. His twin studies employ two local species of interest for sustainable aquaculture development: the sea cucumber (Stichopus horrens) and ʻamaʻama, or striped mullet (Mugil cephalus).

The grants have also enabled Andre to add graduate assistants Tyler Goodearly and Reilly Merlo, who are enrolled in the Nutritional Sciences PhD program, as co-investigators.

Sea cucumbers

To improve the productivity of these echinoderms, Andre and Tyler will partner with local producers, fishpond managers, and collaborators to devise a species-specific approach for inducing oocyte maturation and spawning behavior while assessing the viability of larvae. The researchers hope the knowledge gained will provide a framework for overcoming the reproductive dysfunction of Stichopus horrens and reliably producing sea cucumbers in Hawai‘i. Ultimately, it could spearhead national sea cucumber production efforts and lead to practices that will optimize growth in sustainable aquaculture systems, including Hawaiian fishponds.

“This sea cucumber is a good candidate for aquaculture, given its fast reproductive life cycle, ecosystem services rendered as sediment feeders and high value in Asian markets” Andre says.

Striped mullet

Natural recruitment of the ʻamaʻama, or juvenile striped mullet, to fishponds has become unreliable. What’s more, the introduction of hatchery-raised fry directly into the fishponds has been largely unsuccessful.

In order to better understand how to improve rearing practices and stock enhancement of this species, this project aims to establish strategies to adjust the fingerling hatchery environment in order to precondition the ʻamaʻama, improve their environmental resillience, and optimize their survival and growth once introduced to a Hawaiian fishpond setting.

Andre and Reilly will focus on the effects of variable salinity and temperature regimes on physiological markers of growth, stress, and salt-and-water regulation in the fish. This will help establish which environmental conditions can best prepare the juvenile mullet for survival in the natural fishpond setting.

“In addition to informing management strategies for rearing the ʻamaʻama in fishponds, the results should also provide further insight into how these native fish might adapt to future changes in climatic conditions,” Andre says.

Read: “Development of gonadal maturation and spawning strategies in Hawaiian sea cucumbers.”

Read: “The development of environmental acclimation-based rearing strategies to optimize survival and growth in amaʻama or striped mullet, Mugil cephalus”
